Pitt innovators were issued six U.S. patents in April 2024.
Featured patent: 11,944,426: “Axial Load Cell”
Conventional weight measurement tools pose a challenge to many wheelchair users and those with impaired lower extremity function. Wheelchair users currently require the use of such tools, such as sling scales or roll on scales, only found in select healthcare provider offices. Pitt researchers at the Human Engineering Research Laboratories within the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences have developed a system of axial load cells that can be integrated into a bed to measure weight in a home setting.
