Pitt innovators were issued nine U.S. patents in September 2026.
Featured patent: 12,746,528: Hydrogel Systems for Skeletal Interfacial Tissue Regeneration Applied to Epiphyseal Growth Plate Repair
University of Pittsburgh researchers have developed a new way to repair growth plates, the soft cartilage at the ends of a child’s long bones that drives bone growth. When a growth plate is damaged by injury, disease, or cancer surgery, bones can grow crooked or unevenly, leaving children with lifelong disabilities. Today, no treatment can regrow this tissue. Corrective surgeries are painful, costly, and raise the risk of arthritis later in life.
The new approach uses a gel loaded with stem cells and growth-promoting signals. Small injuries can be treated with an injection, while larger ones can be filled using a gel-infused scaffold. The materials guide the stem cells to form cartilage in the same layered pattern as healthy tissue, without turning into bone, which is where earlier attempts fell short.
In lab studies, the gels successfully directed stem cells to form cartilage while blocking unwanted bone formation.
If successful in patients, this technology could help doctors prevent limb deformities and uneven limb length in children, reduce the need for repeated surgeries, and improve quality of life from childhood into adulthood. It may also have applications in treating arthritis.
