University of Pittsburgh Announces 12 Patents Issued to Pitt Innovators in May 2025

Posted on June 2, 2025 by Mike Yeomans

Pitt innovators were issued 12 U.S. patents in May 2025.

Featured patent: 12,307,657: System and Method for Quantifying the Extent of Disease from 2-D Images

University of Pittsburgh researchers have developed a machine learning method to quantify the extent of pneumonia and other thoracic diseases from two-dimensional (2D) x-ray images, improving the diagnostic ability of such images and reducing costs for patients, hospitals, and insurance companies. This software can be easily integrated into hospital cloud-based systems for point-of-care access and can even be used to trend disease progression between patient scans. A prototype is available and experimental data providing preliminary evidence for the feasibility of the proposed technology for analyzing the extent of emphysema from 2D chest x-ray images in a cohort of COPD patients and pneumonia in a cohort of COVID-19 patients. For more information on this technology, including licensing, contact us at partner@pitt.edu.

Below is a listing of all patents issued to Pitt innovators in April 2025. You can also search all Pitt technologies available for licensing.
