The University of Pittsburgh announced that Pitt innovators were issued 13 U.S. patents in January 2021.
Featured Patent: 10,902,976 “Optical Fiber Based Sensing for Smart Electrical Cables and Distributed Radiation Detection”
Kevin Peng Chen, professor of computer and electrical engineering, and colleagues have developed a technology that turns electrical cables, already present in industrial, commercial, and residential buildings, into innovative sensor platforms by seamlessly integrating optical fibers. Using distributed fiber-sensing schemes including R-OFDR, BOTDR, Raman backscattering, and fiber Bragg grating array sensor schemes, these cables are able to detect both physical parameters, including radiation, temperature, strain, pressure, and liquid levels, along with chemical information such as radical chemical species with high spatial resolutions. The ability to dual purpose already in-place electrical cables makes this a feasible and cost-effective solution for building smart infrastructure and cyber physical systems.
