Pitt Innovators were issued eight U.S. patents in May 2026.
Featured patent: 12,630,840 “One-Step Gene Therapy for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Via Gene Replacement and Anti-Inflammation”
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a common genetic disorder affecting about 1 in 3,500 boys worldwide. It causes progressive muscle weakness starting in early childhood due to the lack of dystrophin, a protein needed for healthy muscle function. Over time, patients may develop serious complications, including heart and breathing problems. Current treatments can slow symptoms but do not cure the disease and often have side effects.
Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have developed a new gene therapy designed to both restore dystrophin and reduce harmful inflammation in muscle tissue. This approach uses a single delivery system that carries two therapeutic components: one replaces the missing dystrophin, while the other decreases chronic inflammation that can limit treatment effectiveness.
In animal studies, a single dose led to strong dystrophin production in heart and skeletal muscles and significantly reduced inflammation. In contrast, standard gene therapy alone did not address inflammation. This dual approach may improve overall treatment outcomes while simplifying delivery compared to using separate therapies.
This technology has potential applications in treating DMD and other inflammatory conditions. This technology is available for licensing.
