The University of Pittsburgh announced that Pitt innovators were issued 10 U.S. patents in April 2020.
Featured Patent: “10,631,792: “System and Method of Determining a Susceptibility to Cardiorespiratory Insufficiency”
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a sharp increase in patients suffering respiratory distress that require interventions, including mechanical ventillation in the most serious cases. Identification of cardiorespiratory insufficiency early or predicting its development beforehand is a challenge that leaves clinicians scrambling to respond to the rapid onset of life-threatening symptoms.
Michael Pinsky, professor of critical care medicine, and colleagues have applied machine learning principles, coupled with human physiological data, to predict if and when patients are likely to develop future distress prior to the onset of severe symptoms, and determine which additional biomarkers and measuring frequency will improve the accuracy and specificity of these predictions. The invention can also assess whether the patient is responsive to interventions and determine if resuscitation has effectively restored tissue oxygen perfusion.
