Lessons Learned from Medical Device Entrepreneurs

What does it really take to turn an idea into a reality? What factors contribute to the formation of a startup company? How do you get a new medical device onto the market?

Two executives, Utkars Jain and Adam Butchy, from the biomed company Heartio are in the process of doing just that. Founded in 2017, Heart I/O builds algorithms based on highly advanced data analytics and mathematical techniques to classify and predict cardiac events. They aim to provide care to the millions of people worldwide who are at-risk for cardiac events, and help diagnose patients quicker and more accurately than ever before. CEO and Co-Founder Utkars Jain joined by CSO and Co-Founder Adam Butchy will be telling us about what they have learned as entrepreneurs and you can help your ideas take shape while avoiding some pitfalls in the process.

Utkars Jain, Co-founder: Utkars lost his grandfather from a chest pain misdiagnosis, which led him to begin work on the core technology over four years ago. He is currently a PhD candidate in Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh, writing his thesis on AI interpretation of medical tests. He has a background in Applied Mathematics and has worked on the Google AI Hub. Utkars is the technical lead and works full-time for HEARTio: refining, training, and testing the model and product.

Adam Butchy, Co-founder: Adam is a PhD candidate in Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh. He has eight years of expertise in life-science research, two years of regulatory experience, and five successful submissions to the FDA. Adam is the regulatory lead and works full-time for HEARTio: crafting the submissions and managing the meetings with the FDA.
