Pitt innovators were issued six U.S. patents in October 2025.
Featured patent: 12,451,495: Highly Active, Robust, and Versatile Multifunctional, Fully Non-Noble Metals-Based Electro-Catalyst Compositions and Methods of Making for Energy Conversion and Storage
Current electro-catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells contain precious metals like platinum and iridium which are both expensive and rare. University of Pittsburgh researchers have developed a highly active, low-cost, robust, and versatile non-noble metals based electro-catalyst for ORR in PEM fuel cells. Additionally, these catalysts can be easily scalable and have a comparable or superior performance to traditional approaches, and can contribute to a sustainable and more environmental approach to energy supply.
