Featured patent: 12,544,398 “Biodegradable, Antioxidant, Thermally Responsive Injectable Hydrogel for Treatment of Ischemic Cardiomyopathy”
Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have developed an injectable hydrogel designed to support heart tissue recovery following a heart attack. This innovative material remains liquid at room temperature for straightforward delivery by injection, then transforms into a supportive gel upon contact with body heat — eliminating the need for invasive surgical implantation.
Once in place, the hydrogel works in two ways: it reinforces weakened heart muscle to help preserve the heart’s structure and function, while simultaneously neutralizing the harmful molecules that accumulate in damaged tissue and impede healing. The material breaks down naturally over time and is safely cleared by the body.
A key advantage of this technology is its compatibility with MRI imaging, allowing physicians to monitor exactly where the material is distributed within the heart. This combination of mechanical support, antioxidant therapy, and real-time imaging visibility represents a promising new approach to treating ischemic cardiomyopathy and improving outcomes for heart failure patients.
