The University of Pittsburgh announced that Pitt innovators were issued eight patents in October 2018.
Featured Patent: U.S. 10,085,721 “Contrast Assisted Intravascular Ultrasound Imaging”
This technology details development of a novel intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) imaging method and apparatus for molecular imaging and characterization of cardiovascular diseases for molecular imaging and characterization of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerotic plaques. The method involves the use of two ultrasound frequencies and microbubble contrast agents. The microbubble is delivered to the vessel and a low frequency ultrasound burst is used to excite the microbubble into oscillation. A high frequency ultrasound burst is used to image the microbubble while it is going through forced oscillation by the low frequency ultrasound. The method uses two pairs of such pulses and further utilizes the timing of the two ultrasound bursts in each pair.
