The University of Pittsburgh announced that Pitt innovators were issued eight U.S. patents in May 2019.

Featured Patent: U.S. 10,299,685: “Method and Apparatus to Enhance Light Illuminating Intensity and Diffusivity”

Kang Kim, associate professor of medicine and bioengineering, and colleagues have developed a method for enhancing light intensity and diffusivity, which can improve deep tissue in vivo animal study. The device consists of a spherical light collector coated with highly reflective materials together with a single element light source or an array embedded on the inner side of the collector. This configuration allows the light source to illuminate the target surface with high intensity and uniformity without increasing the source energy.
