The University of Pittsburgh announced that Pitt innovators were issued 15 U.S. patents in August 2020.
Featured Patent: 10,10,744,308 “Novel Low-Profile Ventriculoamniotic Shunt for Fetal Acqueductal Stenosis“
Fetal obstructive hydrocephalus is a condition that causes permanent brain damage resulting from intracerebral pressure from the obstruction of the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. A University of Pittsburgh innovation team led by YoungJae Chun, associate professor of engineering, is developing a shunt for in-utero drainage of cerebrospinal fluid. The device features percutaneous ultrasound-guided insertion to minimize risk to the mother; is constructed of FDA-approved materials; includes anchoring system to prevent dislodgement or migration and a one-way valve to prevent inflow of amniotic fluid into the cerebral ventricles. Additional intellectual property related to this device has been developed and is in prosecution.
