The University of Pittsburgh announced that Pitt innovators were issued seven U.S. patents in August 2019.

Featured Patent: U.S. 10,376,412 “Actively and Selectively Cooled Cushioning Surface”

David Brienza, Associate Dean for Technology and Innovation at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, and colleagues, have developed an air-cushioning surface with embedded inserts that actively and selectively cool those parts of the body that reach a deep level of immersion into the support surface, while providing adequate cushioning for crucial pressure redistribution designed to greatly increase the quality of life for the immobile elderly, persons with paralysis or neurological conditions, and people undergoing long surgical procedures that might otherwise suffer from painful pressure ulcers.
