University of Pittsburgh Announces Patents Issued in December 2020

Posted on January 20, 2021 by Mike Yeomans

January 20, 2020

The University of Pittsburgh announced that Pitt innovators were issued 16 U.S. patents in December 2020.

Featured Patent: 10,851,354 “TRPV1Modulatory Gene Product That Affects TRPV1-Specific Pain Behavioral Responses Identified in a Functional Screen of an HSV-Based cDNA Library”

Using herpes simplex virus (HSV) gene vectors, Pitt researchers from the lab of Joseph Glorioso, professor of microbiology and molecular genetics, were able to screen for and isolate a specific gene that can target pain-related behaviors associated with TRPV1, a gene implicated in the chronic pain state of patients with arthritis, cancer, cystitis, diabetic neuropathy, and post-herpetic neuralgia. Excitingly, the gene product is highly specific for TRPV1 and does not affect genes TRPM8 or TRPA1, which are involved in a variety of important responses including touch, cold, and other sensations that are undesirable to alter. This technology has broad and flexible applicability for the treatment of disease and associated chronic pain.
