US 9,690,009 “Efficient White Light Scattering Photonic Bandgap Crystal”

Pitt Distinguished Professor of Chemistry Sanford Asher has developed a crystalline colloidal array that diffracts light throughout the visible spectral region over a large range of angles. These can be solidified and particles made from this photonic crystal. These materials can be used to replace highly scattering titanium dioxide materials in paints and coatings.
